Summary

Glutathione is a low-molecular-weight tripeptide composed of glutamate, cysteine, and glycine that serves as one of the most important intracellular antioxidants in mammalian biology. Present in millimolar concentrations within the cytosol and mitochondria, GSH participates in the neutralization of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species and maintains the redox state of protein thiols. The dynamic balance between reduced glutathione (GSH) and oxidized glutathione (GSSG) is widely used in research as a marker of cellular oxidative stress.

Laboratory investigations utilize glutathione to study multiple biochemical systems. As a cofactor for glutathione peroxidases, it enables reduction of lipid hydroperoxides and hydrogen peroxide, protecting membranes and DNA from oxidative injury. Through glutathione-S-transferases, GSH conjugates electrophilic toxins and xenobiotics, supporting phase II detoxification pathways in hepatic and extra-hepatic tissues. Researchers also examine its influence on mitochondrial respiration, NF-κB signaling, immune-cell function, and maintenance of endothelial and neuronal viability under stress conditions.

Glutathione is supplied as a highly purified lyophilized powder for in-vitro and in-vivo experimental use. The peptide dissolves readily in aqueous buffers and is typically prepared fresh to preserve the reduced thiol state. Standard laboratory handling includes protection from light and oxygen, use of inert atmospheres when required, and aliquoting to maintain stability. All available findings relate to experimental research applications; no approved medical uses are implied and human safety or efficacy has not been established.
